<VV> Corvan brake Question

I am servicing the brake cylinders and the left rear cylinder has a 1/4"  
back plate bent 45% and it blocks the piston from coming out. What is the 
reason  for this ???  I ground one end down so I could get the pistons out. 
Don't  know why this is needed.

To do exactly as you  describe....  to prevent loss of brakes if one shoe  breaks, etc...  uncommon but has happened.
