Yes, engine cold.
Grease the tap to collect as much particulate as possible, and it will help with the cutting.
Don't worry what falls in the cylinder.(within reason)
Use some form of thread locker on the insert. Make sure the hole is grease-free. Use a toothbrush and some solvent.

Subject: <VV> Fw: Spark plug thread repair help

Guys,I am going to help out a club member who needs a spark plug insert installed. It has been several years since I've done one - so am looking for some advice: 1 - I believe I have a time-sert tool; a double tap that threads into the existing plug threads and cuts the insert threads; along with a setting tool.2 - I assume this should be done with the engine cold.3 - Should I grease (to trap the chips) or oil (to lubricate) the tap - or use it dry?4 - If chips fall into the cylinder - can I crank the engine to expel them out the plug hole; or use compressed air to clean them out; or don't sweat it - assuming they will come out as the engine runs?5 - Should I use lock-tite on the insert? Red?6 - RTV? Any other advice? Thanks,Andy KWisconsin
