<VV> 4-speed transmission/OD 4th

Back to the Chrysler solution, what they did is they made '3rd' the OD gear, and 4th became 3rd, and the OD gear became 4th. Basically reversing 3rd and 4th. I suppose you could do this with a late Sag and go to a three rod shifter and the standard front engine side cover...

Another interesting point about this set-up- my piston speed when running at 70
and 3000 rpm
is like a late engine running at 2000 rpm, and even if my pistons
were big enough to make the
displacement the same as a late (approximately
92mm), the piston speed would still be exactly
like a late engine running at
2000 rpm, and would seem to me another way of achieving a desired result,
without messing with the transmission.

For what it
is worth- I have a 3:08 ring and pinion and 64-65 4 speed and I'm
currently
running 175/13 tires, and my rpm's to go 70 are 3000-3100. I've had a
chance to compare
the gearing with my 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, as it also has a
tach. What's interesting is that
my Corvair generally runs at 1750 at 40 in
fourth on flat level ground, and the Sunfire runs
at 1500 on flat level ground
at the same speed. Also, to compensate for the taller gearing,
I've lightened
the car close to 200lbs which gives me a more favorable torque to weight
ratio
than it had with the stock 3:55 gearing, tires and weight, so it accelerates
more like it
has been geared down a little. Super fun to drive, although I
haven't had it on the highway
yet. And yes, the EFI helps, ALOT!
