I think I may have resolved this - there is a notch cut out of the 
housing for the cable, but my cable isn't actually sitting in the notch 
- it is hiding in a deeper groove in the mast itself.
I'll try re-routing it & see what happens. It's certainly a weird 
design - luckily I am familiar with it as my Impala has the same switch 
mechanism.
