<VV> Stock Mechanical Fuel Pump Squirts from Top?

The pump was spitting, starting yesterday, and now, nothing!

Yes, I DID know that, which is why I disassembled the pump, expecting to find a ruptured/cracked/defective diaphragm (OK, sorry, not "gasket") but, No-o-o-o ...

The diaphragm looks PERFECT - no cracks, splits, etc, and it was NEW not 5000 miles back, and the rubber still looks NEW!

I have an electric pump, but have had no real abnormal problems with mechanical pumps, except everyone with their horror stories about "reliability" and trying to tell me to use an electric, which has a whole new set of problems (besides installation)?

My theory was that the top cover may have been loose, allowing gas to seep around it somehow, although I can see how that would happen?

If the top cover WAS loose, and was the problem, re-assembling and tightening it may have cured the problem?

Maybe I'll loosen the top cover and test my theory ... :<~{

Thanks for the tutorial,
Charlie

Only way for fuel to get there is a ruptured Diaphragm… not “Gasket” Yes it will re-appear…and causes fire easily with distributor / Coil nearby… Surprised after all these decades you didn’t know this! Shows the “reliability” of most pumps!!

What would make the stock mechanical fuel pump squirts from top?
Mine just started squirting fuel out of the hole on top of the pump.
I disassembled it, to find the gaskets were all near perfect.

 I re-assembled it and it's fine (for now?) How did the fuel get up there?

Thanks for any insights to see if it just "healed" will it come back?!?!
