I always assumed the change to the '63-'64 trunk louvers was an attempt to
dissipate built-up moisture in the trunk, more than making the trunk easier
to close.
Years ago (~1975) before I worried too much about "originality", I installed
a gas heater in my '64 Spyder convert. I also left the hot air heater
hooked-up. I also used the gas heater for the defrosters. Never had any
problem with the "Rapid Action Aircraft-type Heater", as I believe it was
advertised. Although it did tend to rust out its exhaust pipe fairly
quickly. An occasional putt (or fart, depending on your perspective), when
it cycled, but what a great add-on for cold winter driving! Instant heat
and defrost made those cold winter Pennsylvania mornings toasty. And once
the engine was up to temp, off with the gas heater and let the hot air
heater keep the cabin warm. Made top-down winter rides possible. Still have
it installed in the car, but I suppose it will go when I finally get around
to restoring the car.
