<VV> lube heater cables

Is there any way to lubricate the push/pull cables for the heater controls. I disassembled the controls and the slides controls are now properly lubed. However the cables are very hard to move freely by hand. Today I tried to get some graphite and Pb Blaster on the ends hoping some may use capillary action to start to loosen them. This car is original '66 car. Any ideas?  Mike
