Just to add detail, the gears drive the odometer, The needle is 
magnetically coupled in the original speedometer.

I think the major load on the cable is the cable to sheath friction. 
Unless the mainframe bushing needs lube too.😉

I liked the graphite lube sold for speedometer cables back then (before 
electronically driven pulse came out in the 90s deleting the need for 
cables). White lithium is waaay too thick. And gets hard with age, even 
in warm weather.
