If you're using the stock air cleaner system, the air does have to turn 90  
twice, once at the bottom of the center cleaner and once right at the top of 
the  carb. When the air makes these turns, it is quite disturbed, turbulent and 
could  even make a vacuum bubble. The turn at the top of the carb is the bad 
one.  There is very little distance for the air to regain its composure before 
getting  to heart of the carb. The extra two inches in Matt's setup really 
helps this  situation.
 
Of course you could chuck the stock setup and go with 2 (or 4) individual  
air cleaners. I prefer the tall, low restriction types.
