Octane, in common laymans terms has always been, "resistance to self ignition 
under pressure / heat"

Once ignited...the fuel's characteristics and chamber design determine how 
fast it propagates.

At least that's how it was explained to me.....by a muffler man.....who had 
some of the fastest cars on the street..1963.
