My Crown car has the Crown roll bar setup in it. Thinking about either
having the current bar upgraded, if possible, or have a new 8 point put in. Any
suggestions ? Also, if you had a bar or cage installed, what did it cast ?
Called a shop in the area and was quoted $1200.
Thanks,

Before installing a roll bar or cage, you need to first decide if you
want/need to comply with any particular specs. If you do, read the organization's
specs on cages and tubing first. (Think DOM, not ERW) Most shops that do a lot
of cages know the specs, but you need to know them as well. An original
Crown V8 is a tough car in which to build a full SCCA spec cage. The engine
sticks forward into the main hoop area. Diagonal bars are hard to fit in around
the powertrain as well. Think driver protection. If you are contemplating
car-to-car competition, left-side door intrusion protection is very important. If
you are just worrying about roll-over protection (not that Corvairs roll
over) then the front-hoop is more important. By the way, be sure to tie-down the
drivers seat and seat back very well, (to the actual cage is best). If the
hoops stand up well - and your seat pops loose, you will be hurting! The SCCA
cage in my Stinger cost $1400 about two years ago, and I thought that was a
bargain. But I didn't have a V8 in the way. <grin> - Seth Emerson
