Now, will the long shaft box fit a late 65 by removing the upper shaft?
Experts?

The complete column/box assembly can be swapped from the 65 to the 66 and
vice versa. If you move a 65 steering box/shaft to the 66, you should move
the complete column. There are a few holes in the firewall that have to be
altered, but the wiring is plug compatible. The most common swap is to
install the 66 style (actually May 65-on) into the earlier 65 in order to use
the factory quick box or install the Flaming River box and collapsible
adapter. If you are doing this swap, be sure to remove the"Nut-plate" from the
front side of the 66 firewall, when you get the column. That is where the
bolts for the column screw into.

To identify an early 65 column, just look under the dash where the column
goes into the firewall. If the flange/bracket clamps around the column with
a large bolt, it is a 65. If it is tack-welded onto the column at the
firewall, it is a late 65-66.
