<VV> Has anyone ever repaired an e-brake cable ?

I'm not trying to do a sub-standard job that will cause problems down the 
line just to save money, but I can't really throw gobs at every single thing 
that needs fixin'.

I too am finding lots of things that require new, or where I would prefer 
"buying new" but honestly don't see that this is one of them.

This another reason a 4-speed is better - the e-brake is a 'backup' rather 
than a primary system.
