 And ammeters are a significantly greater pain to install, you either need a shunt, or you need to run the high current wiring all the way from the back then to the engine again.
Besides, voltmeters are more informative, as they not only tell you if you're charging, but the state of charge as well. An ammeter can't tell state of charge.

 Voltmeter is a better choice!   Ammeter wiring has to be large gauge...all the 

way up to the dash and then back to the battery....
