I recently got estimates for a head gasket (non-Corvair) from $800 to $1500

Business is business.... they take on a lot of responsibility / Recurring costs, when running a shop...

  That being said....

Friend has a nice '68 Chevy PU.. 250 six...

Spent $4k 16 k miles ago for a "Rebuild" ..has run flawless until this...

He had the carb replaced...$315... a 1 bbl...

Carb came loose from it's base [ common!] leaned out the #5 and burnt the piston...

Shop said carb was under warrantee..but not the damage... $2200+ to repair..depending on what they found..

So he planned to let it set for awhile...as it's only a toy...

Took us 30 minutes to get the head off... 2 hours to pull the piston

$78 parts and gaskets and cost to have the pin pressed...

Approx. 7 hrs. and a 12 pack of Coronas... it's fine..

OH... it's STD. bore and crank!.....luckily the "Rebuild" shop is 500 miles away...

You pay your $$ and you take your chances!
