Check the pitman arm bushing first.

It depends on your idea of expensive.  Brand new boxes are available for ~500, which seems to me a reasonable price for what you're getting.  I suppose you could also learn to program a CNC machine to make your own worm and nut (the unique parts to the quick steer box) if it's unpalatable to just go and buy one ;-)
