<VV> Autolite 275 spark plugs not cuasing pinging - what is ?

67 110 PG runs OK for about a mile or so (maybe less) before getting bogged
down, pinging and knocking, see previous posts.
Since the starter is DOA at this point (see another recent post) I can't
test it, but just before it died, I was able to set the timing, swell, carb
idle, balance tubes, etc, and it still happened.

Previously when the car ran last time I was able to drive to and from LA
(150+ miles) without overheating.

Also, running gas as 'hi-test' as I can get, which had solved the pinging
problem 12 years ago when I first bought the car that had been run on
regular (which is why he sold it - the pinging made him think it needed an
engine, and I didn't know, but found out that a few tanks of hi-test (OK, 91
octane) cleared it up.

Now the pinging is back after it brief respite of 12 years as driveway
decoration.
