Starter engages, turns maybe less than one rev, then nose retracts and spins, but is sometimes enough to start. Sound like a solenoid to you ? Thanks Charlie 1967 Monza 110 PG 2 months and 2 miles so far, but making "progress" (part-time hobby, but would like to drive her someday !)
