Charlie,
I think we need a bit more info:

sometimes it starts on first turn
sometimes the starter disengages, it does not start.
when disengaged the starter will spin, but no contact with flywheel.

will it engage on second try, or not?
if not what happens?

I'm sure others will add to the possibilities.
If you know how, I'd remove the starter, lube the Bendix mechanism, replace the
brushes, check the contact points in the solenoid..... This is mostly your
labor, little $$ involved.

could be poor Bendix
could be bad flywheel
could be weak starter
could be weak solenoid

Starter engages, turns maybe less than one rev, then nose retracts and
spins, but is sometimes enough to start.

Sound like a solenoid to you ?

Thanks
