<VV> Corvair's 'crushable' giant metal 'airbag'

My 35mph crash in my '65 Corsa resulted in a sore neck for a couple weeks. I had a shoulder belt that left a little rash. As you can see in the picture (http://www.persh.org/images/corvairs/corsa-death01.jpg) the main impact point was right at the steering box. The steering wheel came inward about 1/4". The shaft bent down. It ended up with a little tiny drip from the already-patched fuel tank. Not one of my best days but it could have been a heck of a lot worse!
