<VV> Speed in gears

CJ:  Yes, you can do that, and do the opposite using a tach to figure speed
in gears when speedo is dead.  I bought a hopped up big tired 'Vair about 3
decades ago with no speedo, but with a tach.  Timed mile markers on
interstate, assumed it had a 3.55 and found the rolling diameter of the wide
15" tires on the rear from the G'year store, set up a equation and knew my
speed in gears for normal driving: 30 mph in 3rd & 4th, 45 and 60 in 4th and
hello officer otherwise.

But my question is why?  Speed in gears is speed in gears.  Unless you are
performance driving. it doesn't really matter.  What you have is what you
have.  Need more info: buy a tach.  Small ones are cheap last time I
checked, and are two wire instillation last time I installed one.

If you have a 3.55:1 rear axle ratio, it's simple---60 MPH=3000RPM; for
other ratios, compute the ratio of your rear axle to 3.55.

guesstimate my RPM's at 60 MPH  by just doing revs-per-mile times transaxle

Because at 60 I'm doing a-mile-a-minute, so my tires are turning-over the
revs-per-mile # in a minute... equals revs per minute of the TIRES. Times
tranaxle ratio=rev's per minute of the ENGINE... right?

Or am I  missing something?
