Problem is, you need to check it between the skirt and the piston. The top of the piston is smaller than the skirt for gas clearance, deposit clearance, etc. It would be more accurate to pull the top cover and do it from that end. Still, nothing beats taking the cylinders off and using ID and OD mikes.

You need to get a feeler gauge between the piston and the cylinder.wall. I  
would get the top off the motor to check.  If bad , you will be doing  
cylinder/piston work anyhow. If it is off by .010 or more , you can probably  
feel/see it by grabbing a piston skirt. Also look at rods for play at either 
end  .
