Mike,
An arbor press will cause this sort of failure.   You should never use a 
press, but use a torch to gently heat the aluminum and allow it to just 
fall off (if removed and mounted upside down) or pull off gently.   Same 
for replacing it.   Using a press will gall the aluminum and create a 
non-press fit at temps.   I did that my first time and had an idler 
pulley simply fall off when driving. NOT good!   You can use spacers to 
"measure" the installed height and then use the same spacers as a stop 
as you heat the aluminum hub and allow it to gently settle down.   You 
might use a light tap to settle it into place when hot.
