For 1965, Pontiac offered as standard - (for V8s only, according to the
specs) - a fully synchonized 3-speed manual transmission. (The "Muncie"
4-speed was an option.)GM didn't have an all-synchro one - until the "Saginaw"
appeared in 1966, so Pontiac went to Ford, and offered a Ford all-synchro
3-speed in the 65 V8 cars.

My first new car purchase was a '65 tempest with three on the tree. I
don't
recall ever mashing gears going into first.
