Hi Kevin,
Sorry, but I am having trouble following your logic here. I can't see how
Red Line knows what they are talking about (see below). Want to explain?

Besides there is more to the subject as follows.

1) It is in conflict for Red Line to say that a lube meets GL-4 specs but
that lube is not for Hypoids. By definition, GL-4 is allowed to be used
for both MT trannys AND hypoids. So they are in conflict with the SAE , How
can you then accept anything that they say without questioning it?

And there is more.

2) If you will go back and review the thread, Redline says their statement
about not to use it in hypoids is because Chevy (Corvair) way back in 1960
specified that the gear lube must be rated GL-5. So they continue that
belief into today's requirements. THAT IS SHEER NONSENSE!!!!!! GL-5 didn't
exist until sometime in the mid 1970s. Also more important, is the FACT that
Corvair SMs specified the spec MIL-L-2105B for the gear lube. This spec later
became GL-4. So Red Line is wrong about that too. Another good reason to
question Red Line's knowledge and their products. Personally, I wouldn't
touch their stuff after what they have said.

but since Gl-4 "may" be used in transmissions, and the Gl-4 applications
that they are saying are NOT for hypoid gears, but are recommending their
use in transmissions- It looks
to me like they really do know the spec.
