Smitty says,,, there is no reason to ever allow oil vapor to escape past the filler cap.  As already stated you can cut a new gasket to add thickness to the original.  To continue, a good way to test the seal is to get a square of white cloth and drape it over the cap, gathering it around the tube.  Snap a rubber band around that to hold it in place.  Then after driving it a while, check it for oil stains.  It shouldn't have any on it.  If you are one who drives your Vair in cool weather with the heater on, you are breathing what comes out of there.
