Jim is correct.  Worn bushings will really make a starter weak.  I've never seen any worn enough to make the armature drag though.
I have had bad batteries do what you describe also.
I've found Battery Minders work a lot better than the Tenders because of their desulphation circuit.
It could also be a failing winding as Jim mentioned.
Bushings are cheap and would be my #1 guess.  Try that first.

I'm pretty sure it is the coriolis effect because they didn't put a left hand spiral on the Bendix.

Seriously, when you take the starter apart, the reason us usually obvious. 
The armature has been dragging on the pole shoes.  New bushings will usually fix it.  If this isn't it, the problem could be a winding that fails when it is hot.
