Are you only planning to get hit by a Smart car?  They are around 500lbs lighter but most vehicles on the road are much heavier than a Corvair.  A Toyota Prius weighs 5-700lbs more.  Ford Focus? 3055lbs.
Physics do dictate that a heavier vehicle will tend to come out ahead in a crash.

I'll still drive my Monza because it is heavier and more solidly built than most of today's cars.  I have the typical American driver attitude.  If we crash, I'm bigger and heavier and you'll get hurt before I will.
