Thanks, but in an earlier post I explained how the waters always get 
muddied during the course of a long discussion. One of the first things 
I mentioned, and the reason I found this detonation puzzling, was that 
it was happening when cold, or at least before the engine had reached 
operating temperature. Detonation on a hot engine is no mystery. 
Detonation when cold is very unusual if not unheard of.
And it was the other way around incidentally; it was the left carb that 
was not working properly, and as you say, the sensor is on the right, so 
it makes sense that the right side would be getting hotter. This is why 
these laser thermometers are useful, for comparing the temp of various 
parts. Except somebody nicked mine so I no longer have one!
For the record, I haven't been on a long run yet to see whether I will 
need to take the top cover off or not.
